Places to Search For Domain Name Ideas
How and Where to Purchase Your Domain Name
Video Transcript:
When it comes to building your very own website, or even hiring someone to build your website for you, you’re going to need two things: 1) you’re going to need a domain name and 2) you’re going to need web hosting.
Here’s a little analogy; in order to get to a house or an apartment, you’re going to need to have the address. That’s essentially what a domain name is. Once you arrive at the property address, you’re going to find a house or apartment. If you own a home, you’re going to need to add things to a house on the outside, like bricks, stone, or siding that contribute to the design. You will want to add furniture and decor inside, which is like the content on your website.
Once online, you can purchase a domain name at any domain registrar. You then will need to choose a web hosting company. After you have successfully chosen your domain name and purchased your hosting plan, you will need to connect the two.
When somebody visits your website domain name, they will see the content you have created. But first and foremost, you’re going to need a domain name and that’s what we’re going to talk about in this particular video.
There are many different domain registrars where you can register your domains and find different domains. Different domain registrars can be different. Some will have different extensions, which are yourdomain.com, .net, .org, .co and so on. There are two main domain registrars that I want to talk about because they’ve been around for a long, long time and are a safe choice.
The first one is GoDaddy.com. If you go here and you are interested in a specific domain name, you can simply enter it. After you click “search domain name”, it will tell you if it is available or not. For example we’ll enter “your company name” and a bunch of random numbers and then click on “search domain”. As you can see here, it is doing a search and it is telling us how many of these are available. We can see that this domain .info, .net, and all of these are available. So, we have .co, .us, .com, .business, .enterprise, .limited, etc. Different domain registrars have different extensions. For the most part, they all have extensions such as .com, .net, .info, and .co, but some of them have things like .enterprise and .limited whereas places like namecheap.com will have different extensions as well.
When you are ready and you want to purchase a domain name, simply click “select” next to your domain name and it will add it to your cart. You can then go through the process of purchasing.
There’s another domain registrar that I want to mention called namecheap.com. Namecheap.com is also a very good site to purchase your domain name from and one that we personally recommend. In fact, they have outstanding customer support. Now, if you go to namecheap.com, it’s the same process. Up at the top here, you’re going to be able to enter the domain name that you want. You click on “search” and it’s going to tell you whether or not it is available. We can see that the .com and all these other ones are available. But as you can see, there are different extensions apart from the main ones. So, we have .tech, .rocks, .news, .press, .design, .io and as you can see, different prices for different ones. But for the most part, the most common like .com and .co and .net tend to be a lot cheaper. So, when you are ready, simply click on “add to cart”, go through the process and purchase it. Once you’ve purchased it, you’ve completed Step 1 where you have your domain name.
The second part is to find web hosting. There are thousands of web hosting companies out there but fortunately, you can pick and choose a certain one that you like and we’ll show you a few that you can get good deals from. So, stay tuned, that’s on the next video coming up. (Already have a domain name but need to transfer? Tap here for additional help with transferring a domain name.)
